In 1991 Serbian rebels attacked newly-formed Croatian state. At the time there was a large Serbian minority in Croatia, spread all over the country. Croats and Serbs lived together in towns for generations. Many Serbian civilians became innocent targets of Croatian revenge. Thousands of Serbian houses were destroyed. In Jovica Brkic’s hometown Bjelovar around 600 houses were damaged. Although the law qualifies such acts as terrorism – and in the case of the terrorism the State is responsible for compensating the victims – no one was ever compensated by the State. There was no political will to compensate Serbs. The laws were cleverly manipulated by the lawmakers.
NGO “Pravda (Justice)” is an organization of people trying to collect compensation for their destroyed property. Many of them lost everything in the process, due to high legal costs. Jovica Brkić tries to help them and battles for their rights…
