Dubica

Synopsis:

Hrvatska Dubica is a village not far from Zagreb, on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska), on the very edge of the European Union. The place, which has never recovered from the war devastation of the 1990s, is practically extinct, left to itself and the dwindling number of the remaining inhabitants, who blame the war for the problems of their birthplace. Hrvatska Dubica, which before the war was in every segment focused on the neighboring town of Kozarska Dubica in BiH, is completely isolated by establishing a border between the newly formed states.

The main character in the film is Nikica Jukić, a Croatian war veteran who went to war at the age of 17 and retired at the age of 22 as a war invalid. Nikica lives with her unmarried wife Svjetlana, a Serb by nationality, who, like other residents of Hrvatska Dubica, talks about the problems she faces in everyday life, as well as her views on love, hate, nationalism, interethnic coexistence, but also current topics such as the border of the European Union and the arrival of migrants from the east.
